Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approximately. 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
4 minutes later:The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.
6 minutes:A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.
10 minutes:A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.
45 minutes:The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.
1 hour:He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.
This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities.
*In a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?
*Do we stop to appreciate it?
The questions raised:
*Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?
One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made…
How many other things are we missing?

This is just terrible.  That poor family.

MY RAGE IS BOUNDLESS

I CAN’T EVEN

THEY PUT SOCIAL WORKERS IN THEIR HOME AND WATCHED THEM EAT AND MIGHT FORCIBLY PUT THEIR CHILDREN INTO FOSTER CARE WITH NO CONTACT

BECAUSE THEY’RE FAT.

BECAUSE THEY ARE FAT PARENTS AND BECAUSE SOCIETY IS FUCKED AND THINK FAT PARENTS ARE BAD PARENTS AND FAT PEOPLE ARE BAD PEOPLE AND I JUST UGH I JUST I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO

This is the most horrifying thing I’ve read today, and I’m currently working on police blotter.

Fucking hell can we stop with the fucking fat hate, this is disgusting

oh my god, that the fuck?!!?!

I heard about this, it’s enraging. How dare anyone do something like this to a family.

If they cared so much about the children why didn’t they help the family get in touch with a nutritionist and a family counselor to work with them? You can’t just tell people “Okay change now or ___ will happen” then not give them tools to accomplish it and expect that they just know what to do.

This poor family. :(

This is beyond terrible. And just think, which group are they going to do this to next?

wow. I may be starting to believe in the apocalypse.

fucking too much.

The assumption that human beings are inherently selfish—interested in the greater good only when it serves their own interests—has long-influenced capitalism’s most prominent thinkers (Adam Smith, Alan Greenspan, Gordon Gekko) and served as a litmus test for modern America’s so-called political realists. Employees are best motivated with bags of carrots and a big stick. Without law there is no order, and without the threat of punishment there is no law. We’re all out for number one. Greed is good. Dogs eat dogs.
A compelling counter-narrative is emerging, however. In the latest issue of Harvard Business Review, Yochai Benkler points to “recent research in evolutionary biology, psychology, sociology, political science, and experimental economics [that suggests] people behave far less selfishly than most assume.” Keep reading …

interesting. The corporate people are starting to wonder why the world left them alone to play by themselves.

"Girls were not allowed to converse except from 6 to 9 p.m. each Friday. They were not allowed contact with their families during their first month, or with anyone else for six months. By that time, Roxy said, most girls are 'broken,' having been told that their families have abandoned them, and that the world outside is a sinful, dangerous place where girls who leave are murdered or raped."

The 400 richest Americans could pay off every student loan in the United States in full. And still practically be billionaires.

Greed!

And I think that we should be paying attention to artists in those categories and not supporting them. Hell anyone, don’t buy from them if they are greedy fucking millionaires. I don’t care HOW HARD THEY SAY THEY WORK and IT’S THEIR GODDAMN MONEY, fuck you MILLIONAIRES because I work just as hard but because I wasn’t born into the proper socio-economic class, or I don’t have any bankable talents, DOES NOT mean that I should be in debt forever while you own 4 goddamn fucking yachts!

Drugs Found Ineffective for Veterans’ Stress

Drugs widely prescribed to treat severe post-traumatic stress symptoms for veterans are no more effective than placebos and come with serious side effects, including weight gain and fatigue, researchers reported on Tuesday.
The surprising finding, from the largest study of its kind in veterans, challenges current treatment standards so directly that it could alter practice soon, some experts said.
Ten percent to 20 percent of those who see heavy combat develop lasting symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, and about a fifth of those who get treatment receive a prescription for a so-called antipsychotic medication, according to government numbers.
The new study, published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, focused on one medication, Risperdal. But experts said that its results most likely extend to the entire class, including drugs like Seroquel, Geodon and Abilify.
[…] The use of such drugs has grown sharply over the past decade, as thousands of returning soldiers and Marines have found that their post-traumatic stress symptoms do not respond to antidepressants, the only drugs backed by scientific evidence for the disorder. [read more]

I read about a study they were conducting to treat PTSD using MDMA (ecstacy) during therapy sessions. I think this is the avenue they should go. I also think not enough people get GOOD counseling. Of course docs just wanna hand prescriptions out.

Bestiality/zoophilia is legal in 17 states.  It’s a disgusting fact and is something that truly needs to change.
In DeFuniak Springs, FL, Janey is the innocent victim of sexual abuse and neglect.  Her desperately sad and pleading eyes speak volumes about her suffering.  The perpetrator, Eugene Hickman, 54 years old and a grandfather no less, was arrested after it had been reported by his grandson that he was caught while in the bedroom of their home, naked and on top of the dog.
Hickman didn’t deny that he’d committed this horrible act.  In fact, he stated to police that he knew it was wrong and promised not to do it again.  But Janey’s body is clear evidence of a lifetime of abuse.   While Janey is only 3 years old, she clearly has suffered for her entire life. Hickman was charged with one count of felony animal cruelty, but it remains to be seen if he’ll get anything more than the usual legal slap on the wrist that most animal abusers end up receiving.
Janey and her life moving forward is the most important thing, however.  The wonderful organization, Noah’s Arks Rescue, stepped up immediately after Janey was seized, trying to get her to their facility right away.  After some delays she was finally turned over to Noah’s Arks Rescue, where the intensive rehabilitation for this precious girl is underway.
Janey is suffering from Demodectic mange, which can flare up when a dog’s immune system is compromised.  Dogs who are enduring extreme neglect or cruelty become emotionally and physically stressed, and this type of mange can take over, causing the dog even more suffering.  Janey was also emaciated when she was seized, with her poor little hind quarters showing the clear signs of being rubbed bare and raw from all of the sexual abuse.  She also has an eye infection and sores all over her abused body.

Russell Brand, a former addict, and friend of Winehouse when she was an unknown talent, wrote this tribute to express his sadness over Winehouse’s death on his website:

“Now Amy Winehouse is dead, like many others whose unnecessary deaths have been retrospectively romanticised, at 27 years old. Whether this tragedy was preventable or not is now irrelevant. It is not preventable today. We have lost a beautiful and talented woman to this disease. Not all addicts have Amy’s incredible talent. Or Kurt’s or Jimi’s or Janis’s, some people just get the affliction. All we can do is adapt the way we view this condition, not as a crime or a romantic affectation but as a disease that will kill. We need to review the way society treats addicts, not as criminals but as sick people in need of care. We need to look at the way our government funds rehabilitation. It is cheaper to rehabilitate an addict than to send them to prison, so criminalisation doesn’t even make economic sense. Not all of us know someone with the incredible talent that Amy had but we all know drunks and junkies and they all need help and the help is out there. All they have to do is pick up the phone and make the call. Or not. Either way, there will be a phone call.”
read the entire tribute here.

Drugs and booze seem to go hand in hand with stardom, as we’ve seen far too many times— Russell is best known as the foulmouthed British comedian. He is a former sex and heroin addict who quit his habits after being caught doing drugs in a bathroom at a Christmas party. He’s been clean and sober since 2002.

[TRIGGER WARNING- discussion of rape/gang rape]

Saanich police are investigating after a young woman was sexually assaulted multiple times Friday night.

Investigators say the victim, a 20-year-old Victoria resident, had left a party with friends but got separated in the area of Cedar Hill Cross Road and Cedar Hill Road.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m., she was approached by a man who forced her into the rear of a four-door car with up to three other men inside. She was driven around for an extended period of time before being dropped off in front of a Victoria grocery store.

Sgt. Dean Jantzen said police are not disclosing the details of the assault, but said it was “a disturbing assault, and there was a sexual nature to that assault.”

The woman received minor injuries, and is deeply traumatized by the incident. She is receiving support at the Victoria Women’s Sexual Assault Centre.

Jantzen said investigators have exhausted all available leads, and made a public plea for information.

"We have no information about the suspects, nor does the victim appear to know who the suspects are," he said.

"If there are people out in our community who are talking about this, bragging about it, Facebooking or Tweeting or chatting about it online … we need to know that."

Anyone with information on the assault is asked to call the Saanich Police Department at or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS
